History of the Company

Josh_Jablon.jpgUniversity Painters® Founder, Joshua D. Jablon, was in college in 1986 when he started house painting as a summer job in the Philadelphia, PA area.  During this time he worked as a house painter, crew foreman and later as an owner of a national franchised house painting business while attending college full time.

Upon graduating from college, Jablon established the University Painters® trade name and Trademark.  In 1991 University Painters began franchising painting businesses in three states.  By 1993, University Painters was one of the largest franchisors in the Washington, DC metro area. (See the Washington Business Journal Article.)  By 1998 approximately 100 franchises were established each year, many owned and operated by students.

In about 1999, University Painters changed its approach and began using permanent full time non-student owners who licensed the University Painters trade name and trademark and operated larger painting businesses.  This licensing arrangement allowed for a highly flexible business system.  At the same time, many University Painters Licensees started replacing their seasonal student painters with professional painting crews.  At present, the University Painters Licensees continue to use this career professional painting crew system which aids the year round operation of their businesses.  Additional Press on University Painters can be reviewed by Clicking Here.

The Jablon Group is a Licensee of the University Painters trade name and trademark and is seeking Independent Sales Reps to operate its business units in various locations.

Why Run a University Painters Business?

University Painters has a long track record and proven system for success!  Why reinvent the wheel?  We have already learned the formula to run a successful business and have an in depth training program to help ensure you reach the goals you desire.  We are also part of an $80 billion industry with a service that nearly every one needs.  Even in the current difficult economy our business continues to stay strong!

This business allows you to take control of your future, provides high income potential, flexibility of your schedule, and the freedom for you to make the decisions.  The seasonal nature of the painting business is also something you don't find in almost any other type of business.  Some Sales Reps even shut their business down for the three month period December through February to travel, spend time with family and friends and pursue other hobbies they enjoy.  How many jobs or businesses do you know of where you can take that kind of time off if desired and still create wealth?

The Typical Business Model

A typical University Painters operation has between 1 and 3 professional estimators (one of which is usually the Licensee or Independent Sales Representative) and 2 to 15 teams of professional painting subcontractors (usually referred to as Approved University Painters® contractors or “Subs”) who perform the actual painting jobs. You can review the Washington Times Newspaper Article entitled "Strong Strokes" written about one of our Painting Contractors.

Most Independent Sales Reps spend the majority of their time estimating and selling projects and coordinating advertising and marketing efforts in their geographic region.  They also coordinate and manage Approved Contractors to ensure the completion of all jobs.

Advertising & Marketing Systems & Methods

University Painters has developed a number of marketing and advertising methods that have enabled its Licensees and Independent Sales Reps to very successfully advertise and market their services. Licensees and Independent Sales Reps typically cooperate to purchase certain advertising and take advantage of economies of scale and volume purchasing.

University Painters Call & Data Center

University Painters has an incoming telephone answering service and estimate call scheduling center which is staffed by live operators 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to ensure that customers requesting estimates are immediately able to schedule those appointments. These estimate appointments are immediately forwarded to the estimators in the field by email or text messaging via their cell phone or blackberry. You can listen to actual call center recordings by clicking below.

Compensation

An Independent Sales Representative typically earns 15-20% of sales. (See Compensation Example). Unlike most typical jobs, you will have the opportunity to decide for yourself how much money you make. Some of the factors include your desire and determination for success, your level of organization, and your ability to work well with others.

Training

This is your opportunity to develop yourself as an individual and as a businessperson. Our program provides extensive group session training as well as on-going one on one training from experienced General Managers who have run successful businesses themselves. During these training sessions Sales Reps will learn all the skills necessary to run an Outlet including cost estimating, marketing, interviewing, sales, finance, accounting, conflict resolution, production and people management. These training sessions are optional (see Training Programs).

Requirements

We are seeking individuals who are results driven, have a proven track record in past experiences, and want to control their own success & time.

You should:

• own your own car or truck to drive to estimates and visit job sites
• live in/relocate to a location where we want to establish a new University Painters Business
• have a cell phone and wireless email or Blackberry
• have a computer with internet access

You Don’t need:

• to know how to run a painting business – full training is provided for all aspects of the business (see Training Programs).
• to ever own any ladders or painting equipment
• a physical office location – most Independent Sales Reps work from home
• your own business phone lines – you could elect to use a call center/Answering Service available to our Sales Reps
• Employees – we recommend utilizing Approved University Painters Contractors (Click Here to see our PaintersWanted.com website)

Where do our Independent Sales Reps come from?

The typical Independent Sales Rep who manages a University Painters business full time comes from a variety of different lines of work. We have Sales Reps who were former student Sales Representatives while in college who turned their summer house painting business into a full time career venture, while others have left corporate jobs or other businesses to seek the income, flexibility, and other perks of having their own business.

Regardless of past experience, the right person with an interest in operating their own business can achieve remarkable success through this program.  You can listen to Audio Interview files from University Painters Licensees Gregg Landis and Sara Williams as well as others by clicking on the pictures below.
